Liberty’s Bill Laimbeer named WNBA Coach of the Month

NEW YORK – The New York Liberty’s Bill Laimbeer today was named the WNBA Coach of the Month for games played Aug. 1 through Sept. 3 – the final month of the 2017 regular season.

Laimbeer guided the Liberty to a WNBA-leading 10-2 record for the month as New York finished the season with the Eastern Conference’s best mark at 22-12.  The Liberty won its final 10 games to match a franchise record for longest winning streak, set in 2010.

After earning a first-round bye as the third seed in the 2017 WNBA Playoffs, New York will host a second-round, single-elimination game against a yet-to-be-determined opponent on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 5 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

Under Laimbeer, the Liberty went 6-0 at home and 4-2 on the road during the month, highlighted by victories over the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx and second-seeded Los Angeles Sparks at Madison Square Garden.  New York led the WNBA in fewest turnovers per game (11.8) and opponents’ three-point field goal percentage (39.8).  The Liberty also posted a 6-0 record when holding the opposition to fewer than 70 points.

The other nominee for the WNBA Coach of the Month was Los Angeles’ Brian Agler.  This season marks the first time that the WNBA is presenting a Coach of the Month award.
