Dream’s Nicki Collen named WNBA Coach of the Month
NEW YORK – The Atlanta Dream’s Nicki Collen today was named the WNBA Coach of the Month for games played in July.
Collen guided the East-leading Dream to a 9-2 mark in July, which tied the Seattle Storm for the league’s best record for the month. Atlanta went 4-0 on the road and 5-2 at home to improve to 16-10 overall, moving from ninth place to second in the league standings.
The Dream won a franchise-best eight consecutive games during July, highlighted by an 87-74 home win over the league-leading Storm on July 22. In its four road games, Atlanta posted wins over the Indiana Fever, Washington Mystics, Connecticut Sun and Los Angeles Sparks.
Under Collen, Atlanta outscored opponents by 6.4 points per game in July (third in the WNBA). On the defensive end, the Dream ranked second in opponents’ field goal percentage (42.3), third in blocks per game (4.55) and fourth in points allowed per game (79.1). Atlanta averaged the fourth-most points per game (85.5) and finished third in offensive rebounds per game (10.3).
The other nominees for the WNBA Coach of the Month were the Las Vegas Aces’ Bill Laimbeer and the Storm’s Dan Hughes.
