NEW YORK – The Greensboro Swarm selected Admiral Schofield (6-5, 241, Tennessee) with the first overall pick of the 2021 NBA G League Draft on Monday afternoon, which was held virtually. In 2019-20, Schofield played 33 games with the Capital City Go-Go where he averaged 16.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists. He also played in 33 games for the Washington Wizards.
The Memphis Hustle drafted Freddie Gillespie (6-9, 245, Baylor) with the second overall pick. The Canton Charge selected Antonio Blakeney (6-4, 197, Louisiana State) with the third overall selection. The Iowa Wolves picked Allonzo Trier (6-4, 200, Arizona) with the fourth overall selection and the Lakeland Magic drafted Tahjere McCall (6-4, 190, Tennesee State) with the fifth overall pick.
Schofield, Blakeney, Trier, McCall, Justin Patton (9th overall selection, Westchester Knicks), Vincent Edwards (13th overall selection, Oklahoma City Blue), Gary Payton II (15th overall selection, Raptors 905), Jemerrio Jones (19th overall selection, Delaware Blue Coats) and Oshae Brissett (20th overall selection, Fort Wayne Mad Ants) highlight a group that’s spent time on NBA rosters during their NBA careers.
Schofield is the first British-American player to be drafted with the first overall selection in the G League Draft. Other notable international selections include Jonathan Kasibabu of Democratic Republic of the Congo (14th overall selection, Austin Spurs) and Brissett who hails from Canada.
Blakeney earned 2017-18 NBA G League Rookie of the Year honors for his campaign with the Windy City Bulls. Payton II, son of Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Gary Payton, was named to the 2019-20 G League Midseason All-NBA G League Western Conference Team, and was selected for First Team All-Defense for the 2018-19 season. Jones was named to the 2019-20 All-NBA G League Third Team while playing for the Wisconsin Herd.
The 17 NBA G League teams playing in February at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Fla. participated in this year’s three-round Draft.
