Multi Emmy Award winner Gregg Winik named NBA President, Content & Executive Producer
NEW YORK – The National Basketball Association (NBA) announced today that Gregg Winik, the multi Emmy Award winner who recently served as an Executive Producer for the critically acclaimed documentary series The Last Dance, has been named NBA President, Content & Executive Producer. In his new role, Winik will oversee the development and production of live games and other programming on all platforms, including content within the NBA’s direct-to-consumer offerings. He will join the league office on January 3 and report to NBA President, Global Content & Media Distribution Bill Koenig.
Winik has more than 30 years of experience in developing, producing and distributing sports content, including 16 years with NBA Entertainment (1990-2006) where he served as Executive Vice President of Programming and Executive Producer. During his tenure with NBAE, Winik led the NBA’s content initiatives across all media platforms, managed relationships with the league’s television partners, oversaw the launch of NBA TV and supervised original programming such as NBA Inside Stuff. Notably, he played an instrumental role in capturing hours of footage during the Chicago Bulls’ 1997-98 championship season that provided the foundation for the 2020 Emmy Award-winning documentary series The Last Dance.
“Gregg is a highly skilled and award-winning producer with a long track record of delivering compelling and distinctive content,” said Koenig. “He knows the NBA well and will be influential in enhancing the way our games and related programming are presented to our fans.”
“The sports industry is experiencing its most disruptive period in generations, but the programming assets of the NBA, WNBA, NBA G League, NBA 2K League, Basketball Africa League and their teams and players are truly unique,” said Winik. “With premium direct-to-consumer content, the opportunities are striking.”
In 2006, Winik formed Winik Media, an independent production studio and partner for media companies, sports leagues and teams, and advertisers. Winik most recently produced For Ball and Country – the story of the 2021 USA Basketball Men’s Olympic team – for NBC’s Peacock. He also produced NBA Rooks, a multi-season documentary series for ESPN+ on the life of an NBA rookie. Additionally, Winik Media created CineSport, the industry’s first digital video content and technology platform that powered the sports sections of hundreds of well-known newspaper websites, including the Boston Globe, Philadelphia Inquirer and New York Post.
Winik earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film from Emerson College.
