Cavaliers’ LeBron James, Thunder’s Russell Westbrook named Kia NBA Players of the Month

NEW YORK – The Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James and the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Russell Westbrook today were named the Kia NBA Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Month, respectively, for games played in February.

 James led the conference in scoring (24.4 ppg) and was second in assists (7.3 apg) as the Cavaliers went 8-3 in February (8-2 with James in the lineup). He posted five double-doubles and scored at least 20 points in six games, including a season-high 42 points in a 110-99 win over the Golden State Warriors on Feb. 26. In a 102-93 win at Detroit on Feb. 24, James dished out 11 assists and became the NBA’s all-time leader in assists for a forward, surpassing Scottie Pippen (6,135). James was the only player in the conference to average at least 24.0 points, 7.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds for the month.

Westbrook averaged 31.2 points, 9.1 rebounds and 10.3 assists as the Thunder went 9-3 in February. He joined Oscar Robertson as the only players in NBA history to put up a 31-9-10 line for a calendar month (minimum 10 games played). Westbrook capped the month by becoming the first player to record three consecutive triple-doubles since James in March 2009. Westbrook also ended the month with six consecutive games with at least 20 points, 10 assists and five rebounds, the first player to do this since Michael Jordan in 1988-89.

LeBron James, Cleveland Cavaliers

Feb. 8 vs. L.A. Lakers: Scored 22 points and added 10 rebounds and eight assists in a 120-105 win over the Lakers.

Feb. 20 @ Washington: Tallied 28 points, six assists and five rebounds in a 127-89 win over the Wizards.

Feb. 26 vs. Golden State: Scored a season-high 42 points and added 11 assists and three steals in a 110-99 win over the Warriors.

Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thunder

Feb. 2 vs. Orlando: Finished with 25 points, 14 assists, 11 rebounds and four steals in a 104-97 win over the Magic.

Feb. 4 @ New Orleans: Scored 45 points and added six rebounds and six assists in a 102-91 win over the Pelicans.

Feb. 22 vs. Denver: Dished out a career-high 17 assists and added 21 points and eight rebounds in a 119-94 win over the Nuggets.
