NBA celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day worldwide
NEW YORK – The NBA continues its long tradition of celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day worldwide with a full slate of games on Monday, Jan. 21. The league will present nine games with tributes throughout the day to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, the African-American civil rights leader, including four games nationally televised in the United States on ESPN, TNT and NBA TV.
The Indiana Pacers will visit Memphis, Tennessee, the home of the Civil Rights Museum, to tip off the day against the Memphis Grizzlies on ESPN at 1 p.m. ET. The New York Knicks then host the Brooklyn Nets on NBA TV at 3:30 p.m. ET. TNT then will feature its traditional MLK, Jr. Day doubleheader beginning with the San Antonio Spurs visiting the Philadelphia 76ers at 7 p.m. ET, followed by the Los Angeles Lakers playing at the Chicago Bulls at 9:30 p.m. ET.
The league has also teamed up with eight international television partners to present ‘NBA Slam Dunk Monday,’ which will feature live games in prime-time for fans in Europe. The eight partners participating in ‘NBA Slam Dunk Monday’ will reach fans in 72 countries and territories in 24 languages and carry up to 22 hours of live game action. Overall, NBA games reach fans in 215 countries and territories in 47 languages.
The eight ‘NBA Slam Dunk Monday’ television partners include: Sporting Telenet, Belgium; beIN Sport, France; GMG Sport, Georgia; Sport 5, Israel; Sportklub, Pan Adriatics; Canal+, Poland; DSmart, Turkey; and ESPN, UK.
NBA LEAGUE PASS, the league’s fully integrated out-of-market live game package which provides fans with access to more than 40 live NBA regular games each week through television, broadband, and mobile, will offer a free trial for fans, both domestically and internationally, tipping off on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and running through Jan. 27.
The NBA will join its television partners to promote ‘NBA Slam Dunk Monday’ through online and print marketing, editorial and on-air promotions featuring dedicated player greetings together with tune-in alerts and updates on localized Facebook sites.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day marks the birthday of the iconic African-American civil rights activist and is a national holiday in the United States.
