Mystics’ Elena Delle Donne, Lynx’s Maya Moore named WNBA Players of the Week
NEW YORK – Elena Delle Donne of the Washington Mystics and Maya Moore of the Minnesota Lynx today were named the WNBA’s Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played Aug. 6-12.
Delle Donne was named Player of the Week for a league-leading fourth time this season and the 16th time in her six-year career after Washington (20-11) went 3-0 to extend their overall winning streak to six games. She ranked first in the WNBA in scoring (27.7 ppg) and third in field goal shooting percentage (63.0) while connecting on 57.1 percent of her three-point attempts. Delle Donne also averaged 5.7 rebounds for the week.
The 6-5 forward/guard opened the week with 30 points, four rebounds and three assists in a 103-98 road win over the Phoenix Mercury on Aug. 7. On Aug. 9, she finished with 30 points, six rebounds and two assists in a 100-77 home win over the league-leading Seattle Storm. The 2015 WNBA Most Valuable Player closed out the week with 23 points and seven rebounds in a 93-80 win over the visiting Dallas Wings on Aug. 12.
Moore earned Player of the Week honors for the third time this season and 20th time overall, tying Phoenix’s Diana Taurasi for the fourth most nods in WNBA history.
The reigning WNBA All-Star Game MVP led the Lynx to a 2-1 mark as Minnesota ended the week with a 17-14 record. Moore led the Western Conference in scoring (25.7 ppg) and steals (3.0 spg) while ranking third in three-point field goal percentage (56.0). She also averaged 5.7 rebounds.
Moore opened the week with 31 points, six rebounds and five assists in an 85-64 win over the host Chicago Sky on Aug. 7. On Aug. 9, she poured in 34 points on 12-of-19 shooting, including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, in an 89-73 win at the Las Vegas Aces. Moore closed out the week with 12 points, seven rebounds and five steals in an 81-72 loss to the visiting Storm.
Other candidates for the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week were the Atlanta Dream’s Renee Montgomery and Elizabeth Williams, Chicago’s Courtney Vandersloot, the Connecticut Sun’s Jonquel Jones, the Aces’ Kelsey Plum, the Lynx’s Sylvia Fowles, the Mercury’s DeWanna Bonner, Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi, and the Storm’s Breanna Stewart.
