NBA and Headspace team up in Canada to support mental wellness

TORONTO – The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Headspace, the world’s leading meditation and mindfulness app, today announced a free one-month membership available for NBA fans in Canada to encourage discussion about mental wellness.

The two-week redemption window begins today, making the Headspace app available to all Canadians.  From Jan. 15-29, Canadians can sign up at www.headspace.com/code using code PTMENTALFITNESS and gain access to Headspace’s comprehensive library of meditation content, designed to strengthen mindfulness and meditation skills.

“Members of the NBA family continue to stress the importance of mental health both in Canada and across the globe,” said NBA Canada Vice President and Managing Director Dan MacKenzie.  “The NBA is proud to team up with Headspace as we get ready to take part in Bell Let’s Talk Day and inspire even more Canadians to join the discussion on mental wellness and encourage healthy living.”

The NBA is a long-time supporter of the Bell Let’s Talk mental health initiative. On Bell Let’s Talk Day, taking place this year on Jan. 30, Bell Canada will donate 5 cents to Canadian mental health programs for each eligible text, phone call, and social media interaction on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, at no cost to participants. You can learn more about how to get involved in Bell Let’s Talk Day at Bell.ca/LetsTalk.

“Headspace and the NBA are committed to educating and inspiring athletes and fans about the importance of mental fitness, and shaping culture to place as much importance on training the mind as we do training the body,” said Lindsay Shaffer, Head of Sports and Fitness at Headspace. “We are honored to lend our support to Bell Let’s Talk Day, as we believe that overcoming the stigma associated with mental health is a necessary part of encouraging proactive mental fitness.”

The Canadian trial membership complements an ongoing partnership between the NBA and Headspace.  All league and team employee have free access to Headspace’s popular app, and emotional wellbeing, mindfulness and stress relief programming incorporated into the league’s marquee events, and NBA FIT, Jr. NBA and elite youth development programs.

Last year the NBA launched a PSA with DeMar DeRozan (San Antonio Spurs) and Kevin Love (Cleveland Cavaliers), aiming to inspire others to address mental wellness in their own lives, and encourage fans to become more healthy and resilient.  To learn more about the league’s efforts, please visit cares.nba.com/mindhealth.
