NBA Finals: Broadest reach ever

NEW YORK – The 2010 NBA Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics will be televised in 215 countries and territories in 41 languages and streamed on NBA.com via NBA LEAGUE PASS Broadband International to more than 200 countries and territories.

More than 280 international media members from 36 countries will converge in Los Angeles and Boston. A record 44 media members from Spain will be at The Finals to cover the action and report on native son Pau Gasol of the Los Angeles Lakers. There will be 43 broadcast partners airing The Finals for the first time and 20 partners will broadcast in high-definition.

For the first time ever, The Finals will be available live in movie theaters throughout Mexico via a partnership with Cinepolis, the leading cinema chain with 236 complexes and more than 2,200 screens. The games will be televised throughout the country by ESPN and Sky Mexico and TV Azteca, one of Mexico’s leading free-to-air networks, will also be onsite.

There will be expanded coverage in Africa, with The Finals being broadcast to 15 free-to-air stations for the first time through a new partnership with CAfrica, and long-time partner ESPN. The NBA opened its first office in Africa in Johannesburg in May. The NBA has offices in 16 markets worldwide.

The NBA now has 13 international websites providing coverage in local language, including the recently launched NBA.com/arabic and NBA.com/india. Live audio of all games will be available on NBA.com in eight languages.

Fans in China can enjoy live coverage through 51 television and digital media partners, including national television network, CCTV and all games will be streamed live on NBA.com/china, NBA.com/hongkong and NBA.com/taiwan in partnership with Tom Group.

The NBA.com reporters from China will be onsite using an innovative technology, LiveU, to report live and offer behind-the-scenes coverage from The Finals for the first time. CNTV, the recently launched Internet Television portal of CCTV, will stream all games live for the first time.

In the Middle East, live games with Arabic commentary will be available on Al Jazeera. In India, Ten Sports will be onsite for the first time to film a behind-the-scenes, three-part miniseries.

The Finals will have comprehensive coverage in key markets throughout Europe. ESPN will air The Finals in the United Kingdom for the first time and BBC will have daily video highlights. Fans in Spain can watch Gasol try to capture his second NBA title live on Canal Plus.

NTV Plus Sport will be onsite from Russia to provide live commentary and Russia 2, a leading free-to-air station, will have delayed coverage. NBA.com/germany reporters will use the LiveU technology to report live from The Finals for the first time.
