NBA Global Games Mexico City 2013 presented by Samsung tips off Dec. 4
NEW YORK – The National Basketball Association (NBA) will tip off NBA Global Games Mexico City 2013 presented by Samsung — a regular-season game between the San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Timberwolves — on Dec. 4 at the Mexico City Arena.
This will mark the NBA’s second regular-season game and record 21st NBA game played in the country, the most anywhere outside the U.S. and Canada.
The NBA will have played a total of 148 international games since 1978 following this game and NBA Global Games London 2014, a regular-season match between the Brooklyn Nets and Atlanta Hawks at The O2 on Jan. 16, 2014. This marks the first time the league is staging regular-season games in two countries outside of the U.S. and Canada in the same season.
A record number of international players in an NBA game will take part in the Mexico City game with a combined 17 players born outside the U.S. featured on the rosters of the Spurs and Timberwolves. Participating international players include:
- Timberwolves (7): Luc Mbah a Moute (Cameroon); Ronny Turiaf (France); Nikola Pekovic (Montenegro); Jose Barea (Puerto Rico); Alexey Shved (Russia); Gorgui Dieng (Senegal); Ricky Rubio (Spain);
- Spurs (10): Manu Ginobili (Argentina), Aron Baynes (Australia), Patty Mills (Australia), Tiago Splitter (Brazil), Cory Joseph (Canada), Nando De Colo (France), Boris Diaw (France), Tony Parker (France), Marco Belinelli (Italy), Tim Duncan (U.S. Virgin Islands)
The game will air live on NBA TV in the U.S. and throughout Mexico and Latin America on ESPN. The game will also be available to fans in 215 countries and territories through television, online or NBA LEAGUE PASS International. The NBA will also engage with its global social media community of more than 488 million fans and followers in real time and provide unprecedented behind-the-scenes access for fans.
In addition to presenting partner Samsung, the game will be supported by global and Mexico-specific marketing partners including adidas, Bimbo, Gatorade, Netshoes, Sprite, and 2K Sports.
For the 2013-14 season, NBA Global Games includes a total of 12 NBA teams playing 10 games (8 preseason and two regular-season games) in 10 cities in seven countries. This represents the most NBA teams to play internationally in a single season in the history of the league.
