Tournament seedings, matchups set for Samsung NBA Summer League 2015 championship
LAS VEGAS – The championship round of the Samsung NBA Summer League 2015 tips off on Wednesday, July 15, in Las Vegas at the Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion on the campus of the University of Nevada Las Vegas. The Toronto Raptors earned the top seed, while the Boston Celtics (2), Denver Nuggets (3), New Orleans Pelicans (4) and New York Knicks (5) comprise the top five seeds. The Sacramento Kings, the reigning NBA Summer League champions, are seeded 21st and will face the 12th seeded Golden State Warriors, the inaugural NBA Summer League champions, at 3:30 p.m. PT in defense of their title.
Tournament action tips off on Wednesday, July 15 when the ninth-seeded Houston Rockets take on the 24th seeded Milwaukee Bucks at 1 p.m. PT at the Cox Pavilion and continues with seven more games featuring other teams seeded 10-23. Thursday’s slate features an additional eight games, including the top-seeded Raptors facing the winner of the 17th-seeded Chicago Bulls or the 16th-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers, the second-seeded Celtics taking on the winner of the matchup between the 18th-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves and the 15th-seeded Portland Trail Blazers and the third-seeded Nuggets taking on the winner of the 19th-seeded Miami Heat and the 14th-seeded Atlanta Hawks.
Each of the 24 participating teams has competed in three games since the event tipped off on July 10, with the results of those games determining the 1-24 seedings in the single elimination tournament. Each team will compete in at least two more contests in Las Vegas — a minimum of one game in the single elimination tournament and then either in a consolation game or in the next round in the championship bracket.
Teams seeded 9-24 will compete on Wednesday, July 15, with the winners of those contests advancing in the tournament to play Thursday, July 16, against teams seeded 1-8, who earned a first-round “bye.” Teams that lose a game on either Wednesday or Thursday will play on Friday, July 17. The single elimination championship tournament resumes on Saturday, July 18, with a champion being crowned on Monday, July 20.
Seeding for the tournament was determined by won-loss records, with ties being broken using quarter-points and then point differential.
