Salt Lake City Stars win 2019 MGM Resorts NBA G League Winter Showcase tournament
LAS VEGAS – The Salt Lake City Stars won the 2019 MGM Resorts NBA G League Winter Showcase tournament at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas. The championship game, televised on ESPN2, featured Salt Lake City defeating the Grand Rapids Drive by a score of 91-88. With the victory, the Stars were awarded a $100,000 prize for NBA G League players on their team.
Juwan Morgan led Salt Lake City to the championship victory by finishing a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds. The Utah Jazz assignee also supplied 26 points and nine rebounds in the Stars’ semifinal victory over the Wisconsin Herd on Friday.
The Stars also received key contributions from guards Nigel Williams-Goss and Justin Wright-Foreman. Williams-Goss, also a Jazz assignee, added 14 points and seven assists in 33 minutes. Wright-Foreman, Jazz two-way player, posted 16 points in 29 minutes. With the victory, Salt Lake City extends its winning-streak to 13 games and improves to 13-2 on the season.
While Salt Lake City led for most of the game, Grand Rapids made a late push and tied the game with just under two minutes remaining in the game. The game featured one lead change and three ties.
Forward Donta Hall paced Grand Rapids with a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds. Detroit Pistons two-way player Jordan Bone netted 17 points while forward Todd Withers registered 15 points and seven rebounds. With the defeat, The Drive drop to 10-9 on the season.
In the tournament, teams were ranked 1-28 based on their records through their first 12 games of the regular season. The top four teams – the Memphis Hustle (1), Wisconsin Herd (2), Salt Lake City Stars (3) and Grand Rapids Drive (4) – were placed into the Championship Bracket.
Salt Lake City will return to action on Friday, Dec. 27 when they host the Austin Spurs at 9 p.m. ET. Grand Rapids will visit the Fort Wayne Mad Ants on Saturday, Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. ET. Both games can be seen on NBAGLeague.com
