Samsung joins NBA as presenting partner of NBA Global Games Mexico City 2013
MEXICO CITY – The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Samsung Electronics Co. (Samsung), a global leader in technology, have agreed to a partnership that makes the consumer electronics company the Presenting Partner of NBA Global Games Mexico City 2013.
NBA Global Games Mexico City 2013 presented by Samsung will feature the Minnesota Timberwolves and San Antonio Spurs playing a regular-season game at the Mexico City Arena on Dec. 4. This game will mark the NBA’s second regular-season game in Mexico City following a game between the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks in 1997. It also will be the league’s 21st game in Mexico overall, the most NBA matchups held in any country outside the U.S. and Canada.
As presenting partner, Samsung will receive prominent brand exposure in Mexico City during the weeks leading up to the game as well as in-arena signage, premiums, and on-court fan activities on the day of the game. Samsung will also host several of their partners at the game and provide a variety of VIP experiences.
The partnership around NBA Global Games Mexico City 2013 follows the recently announced comprehensive multiyear marketing and technology partnership that makes Samsung the official handset, tablet, and television provider of the NBA, WNBA, and NBA D-League in the U.S. and Canada.
“We are proud to join in this partnership with the NBA,” said Director of Sales and Marketing Telecommunications Division for Samsung Electronics Mexico, Juan Miguel Athié. “As the largest consumer electronics’ company in the world and a brand committed to inspire, Samsung believes in supporting and motivating young people. Along with the NBA, we hope to continue to provide excitement and a great experience to basketball fans around the world.”
“Samsung is a world renowned brand with expertise in creating meaningful connections with consumers through its vast line of products,” said NBA Managing Director for Mexico, Raul Zarraga. “As the presenting partner of our second regular-season game in Mexico, we will work together with Samsung to its exciting line of products and provide fans in Mexico with an authentic NBA experience that will showcase two great teams.”
Along with Samsung serving as the presenting partner, NBA Global Games Mexico City 2013 is also being supported by partners adidas, Bimbo, Gatorade, Kir, Lusacell, Sprite, and 2K Sports.
NBA Global Games Mexico City 2013 presented by Samsung is one of two regular-season contests the NBA will play internationally as part of the 2013-14 season; the Atlanta Hawks and Brooklyn Nets are scheduled to play in the United Kingdom on Jan. 16 as part of NBA Global Games London 2014. These games mark the first time the league is staging regular-season games in two countries outside of the U.S. and Canada in the same season.
This will be the Timberwolves first game in Mexico and the fifth overall game in Mexico City for the Spurs, who previously played preseason games in 1994 (two games), 1995, and 2010. The Spurs and Timberwolves began the 2013-14 season with the highest number of international players, with San Antonio having a league-record 10 and Minnesota tied for second with six.
Following the Hawks-Nets game in London, the NBA will have staged 148 games (regular season and preseason) in 20 countries and territories across Europe, the Americas and Asia since 1978. The league also will have played 18 regular-season games in London, Mexico City, and Tokyo dating back to 1990.
