Sky’s Stefanie Dolson, Storm’s Breanna Stewart named WNBA Players of the Week

NEW YORK Stefanie Dolson of the Chicago Sky and Breanna Stewart of the Seattle Storm today were named the WNBA’s Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played July 10-16.

Dolson earned Player of the Week honors for the first time in her four-year career. Chicago went 2-1 for the week behind the 6-5 center, who paced Eastern Conference players in scoring (20.7 ppg), ranked third in field goal percentage (.575, 23-of-40), tied for seventh in rebounding (8.0 rpg) and tied for fifth in blocks (1.67 bpg).

On July 12, the former UConn standout posted 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists in a 90-84 home victory over the Dallas Wings. Two days later, she tallied 23 points, five rebounds, three assists and two blocks in a 78-68 road win against the New York Liberty. Dolson closed the week by scoring a career-best 26 points to go with 10 rebounds and three blocks in a 112-106 double-overtime loss to the host Wings on July 16.

Stewart earned Player of the Week honors for the first time this season and the second time in her two-year career. In guiding Seattle to a 1-1 week, Stewart tied for second among Western Conference players in scoring (23.0 ppg), ranked third in rebounding (8.5 rpg), finished seventh in field goal percentage (.568, 21-of-37) and tied for ninth in assists (3.0 apg).

The 6-4 forward opened her week with 22 points and eight rebounds in an 83-79 home loss to the East-leading Connecticut Sun on July 12. The former UConn star then recorded 24 points, nine rebounds and a season-high six assists in a 90-84 home victory over the Atlanta Dream on July 15.

Other candidates for the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week were Chicago’s Allie Quigley and Courtney Vandersloot, Connecticut’s Jonquel Jones, Dallas’ Skylar Diggins-Smith, the Los Angeles Sparks’ Nneka Ogwumike, the Minnesota Lynx’s Sylvia Fowles, and New York’s Tina Charles.
