Liberty’s Tina Charles, Wings’ Liz Cambage named WNBA Players of the Week
NEW YORK – Tina Charles of the New York Liberty and Liz Cambage of the Dallas Wings today were named the WNBA’s Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played May 28-June 3.
Charles was selected Player of the Week for the 29th time in her nine seasons, extending her WNBA record. The 6-4 center earned seven Player of the Week honors in each of the past two seasons, the most by any player in a season in WNBA history.
Behind Charles, New York went 2-0 last week to even its record at 2-2. Charles averaged a WNBA-high 28.5 points and an East-leading 10.0 rebounds per game. She also ranked 10th in the East in field goal percentage (48.9, 22-of-45) and contributed 2.5 assists per game.
Charles began her week on May 29 with a season-high 34 points to go with 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals in a 94-89 home win over the Wings. She then posted her second double-double of the week and third in a row overall, finishing with 23 points and 10 boards in an 87-81 win at the Indiana Fever on June 2.
For Cambage, the Player of the Week honor is the third of her career and her first since 2013, when she last played in the WNBA before returning this season.
Cambage led the Wings to a 1-1 mark as Dallas ended the week with a 3-3 record. The 6-8 center from Australia paced West players in scoring (26.5 ppg) and led all WNBA players in rebounding (11.5 rpg). She also ranked fourth in the West in blocks (1.5 bpg) and 10th in shooting percentage (53.1, 17-of-32).
Cambage opened the week by equaling her career high of 28 points and adding a season-high 16 rebounds and four assists in the matchup against Charles and the Liberty. She then recorded 25 points, seven rebounds and two blocks to lead Dallas past the Seattle Storm 94-90 on June 2.
Other candidates for the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week were the Atlanta Dream’s Angel McCoughtry, the Chicago Sky’s Cheyenne Parker, the Connecticut Sun’s Jasmine Thomas, Dallas’ Skylar Diggins-Smith, the Las Vegas Aces’ A’Ja Wilson, the Phoenix Mercury’s Brittney Griner, Seattle’s Jewell Loyd and Breanna Stewart, and the Washington Mystics’ Kristi Toliver.
