Magic’s Victor Oladipo, Grizzlies’ Nick Calathes named Kia NBA Rookies of the Month

NEW YORK – The Orlando Magic’s Victor Oladipo and the Memphis Grizzlies’ Nick Calathes today were named the Kia NBA Eastern and Western Conference Rookies of the Month, respectively, for games played in February.

Oladipo ranked first among NBA rookies in assists (4.9 apg) and steals (1.92 spg), second in points (14.7 ppg), and fifth in rebounds (4.4 rpg). Additionally, Oladipo scored in double figures eight times and posted at least 20 points four times. He led Orlando to a 129-121 victory over the New York Knicks on Feb. 21, posting 30 points, 14 assists, nine rebounds and two steals, becoming only the fourth rookie over the last 20 years, and the first since March 2000, to record 30-plus points and 14-plus rebounds in the same game. Oladipo recorded at least two steals seven times during February, including a career-high-tying five steals on Feb. 23, at Toronto.

Calathes ranked second among Western Conference rookies in scoring (10.7 ppg) and assists (4.6 apg), and tied for second in rebounds (3.6 rpg). Among all first-year players, he ranked second in field goal percentage (.495) and steals (1.75 spg).   Additionally, Calathes posted 10-plus points and five-plus assists in six straight games (Feb. 5-18), becoming only the fourth player in team history to ever post such a streak.

Feb. 7 vs. OKC: Recorded 14 points, three assists, five rebounds and two steals in a 103-102 victory over the Thunder.

Feb. 9 vs. Indiana: Contributed 23 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals in a 93-92 win over the Pacers.

Feb. 21 vs. New York: Tallied a double-double with 30 points and 14 assists, and added nine rebounds and two steals in a 129-121 victory over the Knicks.

Feb. 26 @ Philadelphia: Posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, and added three assists, two steals and one block in a 101-90 victory over the 76ers.

Nick Calathes, Memphis Grizzlies

Feb. 1 vs. Milwaukee: Contributed a career-high 22 points, five rebounds, three assists and one steal in a 99-90 victory over the Bucks.

Feb. 9 @ Cleveland: Posted 17 points, six assists, five rebounds and one steal in a 91-83 overtime loss to the Cavaliers.

Feb. 11 vs. Washington: Recorded 18 points, a career-high seven rebounds, six assists and two steals in a 92-89 victory over the Wizards.

Feb. 12 @ Orlando: Tallied 12 points, five rebounds, six assists and career highs with four steals and two blocks in a 86-81 win over the Magic.

Other nominees for the Eastern and Western Conference Rookies of the Month were New York’s Tim Hardaway Jr., Philadelphia’s Michael Carter-Williams, Portland’s C.J. McCollum and Utah’s Trey Burke.
