Sky’s Cappie Pondexter, Lynx’s Maya Moore named WNBA Players of the Week

NEW YORK Cappie Pondexter of the Chicago Sky and Maya Moore of the Minnesota Lynx were named the WNBA’s Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played July 6 through July 12.

Pondexter, a six-time All-Star selection, earned her first Player of the Week award of the season and the 14th of her career.  Now in her first season playing with her hometown Sky, the 10th-year pro led Chicago to a 2-0 record as the Sky improved to 8-5 overall (.615) with wins over Western Conference leader Minnesota and the Eastern Conference-leading Connecticut Sun.

Pondexter ranked second in the Eastern Conference in scoring (26.5 ppg), assists (5.5 apg), and three-point field goal percentage (.889, 8-of-9).  She also ranked sixth among East players in overall field goal percentage (.645, 20-of-31) and was tied for fourth in steals (1.5 spg).

The Rutgers University product opened the week with 24 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals in a 90-83 win over visiting Minnesota on July 10.  She followed that up with 29 points, seven assists, three rebounds, and a steal as the Sky defeated the visiting Sun 96-76 on July 12.

For Moore, the 2014 WNBA MVP presented by Samsung, the Player of the Week honor is her first of the season and the 11th of her career.  The fifth-year player from the University of Connecticut helped the Lynx to a 1-1 week by pacing the Western Conference in scoring (24.5 ppg) and ranking third in rebounding (9.5 rpg).  She also shared the No. 3 spot among West players in assists (4.5 apg), tied for fifth in blocks (1.5 bpg), and ranked sixth in field goal percentage (.487, 19-of-39).

Moore opened the week with a game-high 29 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, two steals, and a block in a 90-83 loss at Chicago on July 10.  She then contributed 20 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and two blocks as the Lynx defeated the visiting San Antonio Stars 66-49 on July 12 to improve to a league-best 9-3 (.750).

Other candidates for the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week were Atlanta’s Angel McCoughtry, Chicago’s Elena Delle Donne, Indiana’s Marissa Coleman, New York’s Tina Charles, Phoenix’s Brittney Griner, Seattle’s Jewell Loyd, Tulsa’s Karima Christmas and Plenette Pierson, and Washington’s Stefanie Dolson.
