NBA to add referee information to game play-by-play

NEW YORK – The National Basketball Association announced today that, beginning with the 2015 NBA Playoffs, referee names will be posted in the official play-by-play feeds alongside all calls reported to the table.  These calls include fouls, technical fouls and all violations, such as goaltending, lane violations and three-second violations.

This initiative is the latest in the NBA’s effort to provide increased transparency in its officiating program.  The addition of the referees’ names will be incorporated into play-by-play reports on NBA.com, NBA.com/stats, NBA Media Central via the game books option and NBA Game Time, the official Mobile App of the NBA.

Previous steps taken by the league to increase transparency with regards to its officials include:

  • This season’s launch of the NBA Replay Center
  • Real-time postings on NBA.com and @NBAOfficial of the replays used by officials to make calls during replay reviews
  • Bi-weekly rule “points of emphasis” memos that are sent to teams, referees and the media
  • The league’s “Last Two Minutes” reports, which detail the accuracy of all officiating calls made in the last two minutes of close games
