Tournament seedings and matchups set for MGM Resorts NBA Summer League 2017

LAS VEGAS – The Toronto Raptors earned the top seed in the MGM Resorts NBA Summer League tournament for the second consecutive year after the first five days of action in Las Vegas. The single-elimination tournament tips off on Wednesday, July 12, at the Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion on the campus of the University of Nevada Las Vegas. (Click here for the bracket.)

The Cleveland Cavaliers (2), Dallas Mavericks (3), Memphis Grizzlies (4) and LA Clippers (5) round out the top five seeds.  The reigning NBA Summer League Champion Chicago Bulls are seeded 17th and will face the 16th seeded Portland Trail Blazers at 7 p.m. PT on July 12 on NBA TV in defense of their title.

The tournament will culminate in a championship game on Monday, July 17 on ESPN.

The matchup between the Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Lakers highlights an eight-game slate on Wednesday featuring other teams seeded 9-24.  Thursday’s slate features eight games, including the top-seeded Raptors facing the winner of the 17th-seeded Bulls or the 16th-seeded Portland Trail Blazers, the second-seeded Cavaliers taking on the winner of the matchup between the 18th-seeded 76ers and the 15th-seeded Los Angeles Lakers, and the third-seeded Dallas Mavericks taking on the winner of the 19th-seeded Sacramento Kings and 14th-seeded Milwaukee Bucks.

Each of the 24 participating teams played in three games since the event tipped off on July 7, with the results of those games determining the 1-24 seeds.  Each team will compete in at least two more games in Las Vegas as the Championship bracket unfolds.  Seeding for the tournament was determined by win-loss records, with ties being broken using quarter-points followed by point differential.

Teams seeded 9-24 will play on Wednesday with the winners of those games advancing in the tournament to play Thursday against teams seeded 1-8, who earned a first-round “bye.”  Teams that lose a game on either Wednesday or Thursday will play a consolation game on Friday.  The championship tournament resumes on Saturday with a four-game slate.

ESPN and NBA TV will present the remaining 31 games from Las Vegas with ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU exclusively televising the Championship rounds on Saturday, July 15; Sunday, July 16; and Monday, July 17.  Additionally, all remaining games will be available live on the ESPN App.
