Mercury’s Sandy Brondello named WNBA Coach of the Month

NEW YORK – The Phoenix Mercury’s Sandy Brondello today was named the WNBA Coach of the Month for games played in June.

Brondello guided the WNBA-leading Mercury to a league-best 11-2 mark in June as Phoenix finished the month with a 13-5 record.  Phoenix went 8-1 on the road and 3-1 at home for the month.

The Mercury won its first eight games of June, highlighted by a 95-85 road victory over the defending WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx on June 1.  In its final three games of the month, Phoenix earned road wins over the New York Liberty, Indiana Fever and Washington Mystics.

Under Brondello, Phoenix outscored opponents by a WNBA-high 7.7 points per game in June as the Mercury thrived on both ends of the court.  Defensively, the Mercury led the league in opponents’ field goal percentage (40.9) and ranked second in points allowed (76.8 ppg).  On offense, Phoenix averaged a WNBA-best 21.5 assists, finished third in three-point field goal percentage (37.0) and ranked fourth in scoring (84.5 ppg) and field goal percentage (45.7).

The other nominees for the WNBA Coach of the Month were the Los Angeles Sparks’ Brian Agler and Minnesota’s Cheryl Reeve.
